The Olympics created nearly 21,000 jobs in British Columbia, and another 1,750 across Canada from interprovincial trade. The event also generated C$684 million to C$884 million in real GDP to the province, and another C$170 million to Canada.
“While this is just a snapshot of what has already happened, the report provides concrete evidence that the Games have given the B.C. and Canadian economies a boost,” said Minister of State Sport Gary Lunn. “Our investments are achieving their intended results, including improved athlete performance in international competition, made-in-Canada innovations in building design, and unprecedented Aboriginal participation.”
The Games resulted in 800 new businesses, C$54 million in construction contracts to Aboriginal businesses, and the development of environmental building design and construction innovations.
